What’s the difference between being in the Army or the Army Reserve? First of all, being in the Army instead of the Reserve is officially referred to as “Active Duty.” Active Duty is like being a member of the Army as your full-time job. If you are a member of the Reserve, however, you keep your day job and spend one weekend per month in training, plus an additional two-week Field Training Exercise per year. The length of either service can last up to six years, and Reserve soldiers can be called up to Active Duty at any time if needed.
