The Key to Helping an Addict

The whole key to helping an addict is to stop enabling them and stop rescuing them.  Ultimately, this can be difficult to do because it can be tough to know when we are actually helping an addict versus when we are hurting them.

For example, you might think you are helping the addict when you bail them out of jail.  This is usually a form of rescuing and is actually harmful to them because it gives them permission to continue with destructive behavior.  What we really need to do in this case is to let them suffer their own consequences and not bail them out of problems that they create due to their addiction.
